Going into UFC 128, the UFC continued its trend of airing some of the preliminary fights on Facebook. It's a feature they introduced this passed January and has been greatly appreciated by those of us fans unable to view other prelims on Spike.
The fights aired on Facebook this evening were Gleison Tibau vs Kurt Pellegrino and Ricardo Almeida vs Mike Pyle, both of which were very competitive match ups.
The bout between Pellegrino and Tibau was particularly close. Pellegrino did probably the most significant damage of the fight when he rocked Tibau in the second round with a few hard right hands. However, Tibau proved himself to be the more consistent competitor throughout the fight, scoring several takedowns.
In the end, Gleison was awarded a split decision victory, much to the disappointment of the New Jersey crowd who wanted the hometown Pellegrino to be awarded the victory.
This was Pellegrino's second loss in a row, so he'll need to pull out a victory in his next fight. If he doesn't, he risks being cut.
The fight between Almeida and Pyle wasn't quite as close as the previous fight. The fight was competitive throughout, but Pyle was rightfully awarded the unanimous decision. He did the most damage throughout the fight standing and scored more takedowns as well.
Almeida has looked relatively unimpressive since dropping to welterweight, going 2-2 in his last four fights.
Pyle achieved his third straight victory tonight, solidifying himself as an up-and-comer in the welterweight division.
