Strikeforce Challengers 13: Saffiedine Vs. Woodley: LIVE BLOG & RESULTS

Strikeforce has invaded the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville TN, for Strikeforce Challengers 13.

A pair of fast rising welterweights are set to face one another as Tarec Saffiedine (10-2) and Tyron Woodley (7-0) will meet in the night's main event.

The co-main event of the evening features a heavyweight contest pitting wrestling standout Daniel Cormier (6-0) versus the heavy-handed Devin Cole (18-8-1).

  • Rhadi Ferguson (2-0) vs. John Richard (1-1)

Rnd 1:

A big right-hand attempt by Richard starts the bout, and Richard presses Ferguson against the cage. The action hits the mat with Ferguson on his back, quick submission attempt by Ferguson fails and Richard passes. Richard moves to Ferguson’s back and has both hooks in. Ferguson is doing a solid job in defending against his opponent’s attempt at a rear-naked choke and hits an escape to take top position.

Now in his opponent's guard, Ferguson is landing shots to the right side of Richard’s body. Richard tries to escape, but Ferguson keeps him pinned against the canvas and Richard has now given up his back. Richard spits out his mouth piece and gets a one-point deduction for doing so. Upon the restart, Ferguson lands a few shots to his downed opponent as the round ends.

Rnd 2:

Ferguson begins the round by taking the center of the cage and appears to be the fresher fighter. Knee by Richard drops his opponent, and he charges in to try and take advantage of the downed Ferguson. Ferguson stays calm and turns the tide on his opponent and is working towards a kneebar. Richard is not doing much to escape the hold and Ferguson forces the fight ending tapout.

  •  Julia Budd (1-0) vs. Amanda Nunes (5-1)

Rnd 1:

Both fighters start exchanging with each landing, but Nunes quickly lands the harder shots and sends Budd to the canvas with a left hook. Nunes follows her opponent to the mat and finishes with hammer strikes.

  •  Devin Cole (18-8-1) vs. Daniel Cormier (6-0)

Rnd 1:

Cole takes the center and opens up with a few jabs that do minimal damage. Cormier responds with a hard leg kick and combo that sends Cole to the cage. They separate briefly and Cormier quickly tracks his opponent down. Huge takedown by Cormier, but he can't keep Cole down. Now standing, Cormier presses Cole against the cage and is controlling the action. Vastly improved striking being shown by Cormier, as he lands a combination and follows suit with another takedown.

Rnd 2:

Right leg kick from Cormier starts the action, and Cole tries to respond with strikes of his own without much success. Cormier shoots, and Cole is successful in defending momentarily, but he can't prevent Cormier from completing the takedown. Quick scramble by Cole and Cormier moves into half guard where he lands a few hammer fists.

Cormier passes and has side control briefly before moving into back mount. Cole escapes the position and is working towards a kimura on Cormier's left arm but is unsuccessful and the round comes to a close.

Rnd 3:

A touch of gloves by both fighters and Cole throws a jab that misses, Cormier responds with a kick to Cole's lead leg. Quick exchange by both fighters and they tie up with Cormier pressing his opponent against the cage. The referee separates the men and Cormier is aggressive with strikes and a takedown attempt, but Cole is doing well to avoid.

Cole briefly presses his opponent against the cage before Cormier reverses the position, and the referee now separates them. Successful takedown by Cormier and he moves into half guard. Both fighters are trying to land punches as the round comes to a close, with Cormier having the edge.

  •  Ovince St. Preux (9-4) vs. Ron Humphrey (7-2)

Rnd 1:

Ovince starts the round by rocking his opponent and sending him stumbling backwards. Humphrey tries to respond, but is quickly denied and sent to the mat by St. Preux. A scramble leads to Humphrey briefly having top control where he is working towards a knee bar. Ovince defends well, escapes the hold and now has side mount on Humphrey where he sinks in a head and arm triangle but can’t force a tap. The round comes to a close with St. Preux in top position.

Rnd 2:

Humphrey takes the center of the cage to start the round and is met with a combination by St. Preux and is taken down to the mat. The referee stands the action up and both met are swinging wildy and landing. The shots by St. Preux have his opponents face bleeding and he is working within Humphrey’s open guard. A few hammer fists by St. Preux and he advances into half guard, but both men are stood up. Humphrey presses forward and lands several good shots to St. Preux and Ovince lands a takedown as the round ends.

Rnd 3:

St. Preux takes the fight to the mat and is working from Humphrey’s closed guard. Minimal work from Ovince calls for a stand up from the referee, but it is short lived as he immediately takes the fight back to the canvas upon the restart. Guillotine attempt by Humphrey is unsuccessful and he is now working from his back with his opponent in full guard. Yet another standup and Humphrey lands two kicks, but slips on the second which sends him to the mat. St. Preux follows and once again is in Humphrey’s guard as the fight comes to an end.

  • Main Event: Tarec Saffiedine vs. Tyron Woodley

Rnd 1:

An exchange from both fighters leads to a tie up along the cage with Woodley landing a takedown. Saffiedine is working hard to get back to his feet and he does with his back now against the cage. Woodley drops for single leg, but his opponent is doing a good job of defending. Saffiedine gets an over under and lands a few strikes to the head of Woodley. Knees from Woodley land to his opponents legs and the referee breaks them from the position. Woodley is landing on the feet, but is unsuccessful when he tries for a takedown  and they tie up with Saffiedine landing a knee to Woodley’s head, but Tyron presses forward to end the round with his opponents’ back to the cage.

Rnd 2:

Saffiedine takes the center and misses with a high kick. Woodley responds with punches, but is also unsuccessful which leads to his opponent landing a low kick and pressing Woodley’s back against the cage. Both fighters land knees from the clinch and Woodley puts Saffiedine on the mat. Woodley appears to be content from working within Saffiedine’s guard and he defends an omoplata attend from Tarec. Now, Woodley moves into his opponents open guard and quickly passes to back control but only has one hook in.

Rnd 3:

Both men open the round with vicious strikes that find their homes and Saffiedine briefly pins Woodley against the cage before they separate. Woodley shoots and Saffiedine stuffs the takedown and reverses into a takedown of his own, but can’t hold his opponent down. Back on the feet now, Saffiedine gets taken down by Woodley and he is working towards a kimura. Woodley defends well and the two scramble to their feet. Body kick by Woodley lands and Saffiedine once again presses Woodley against the cage. The final round ends with a missed head kick from Saffiedine.
