Roughneck John Richard vs. Dr. Rhadi Ferguson – Light Heavyweights
Richard is 3-0, a wrestler from South Carolina who has scored all of his wins by submission. Ferguson, 2-0, is an Olympic judoka fighting out of Florida and holds a doctorate in Education. He’s also rumored to be a cousin of Kimbo Slice.
Richard spent most of the first two minutes going for a rear-naked choke before Ferguson turned the tide and unleashed a devastating series of lefts.
Richard lost a point when the ref penalized him for losing his mouthpiece three times. Humphrey escaped and survived the first round.
In Round 2, Ferguson was floored by what he called a groin shot (the ref didn’t agree). However, Ferguson locked in a knee bar, and then a heel hook for the submission win two minutes into Round 2.
Winner: Dr. Rhadi Ferguson
Julia Budd vs. Amanda Nunes – Women’s Middleweight (145 pounds)
Nunes is a Muay Thai fighter from Brazil. Budd is a Canadian who is 1-0 and is also a Muay Thai specialist.
BOOM! It’s over in 14 seconds! Knockout for Nunes! She floored Budd with a HUGE left and hammer-fisted her way to the win.
Daniel Cormier vs. Devin Cole – Heavyweights
Devin Cole is a veteran from Oregon at 18-8-1; he is on a 6-1-1 run. Cormier is 6-0; he is a two-time Olympic wrestler fighting out of San Jose, Calif.
Cormier is using his wrestling to dictate the pace here in Round 1. Cole showed a lot of toughness, surviving a huge right and a couple of big head kicks, but Cole didn’t generate a lot of first-round offense.
Round 2 sees Cormier smothering Cole against the fence, but Cole walked on the cage to escape. Cormier then controlled Cole some more on the ground in the middle of the cage.
Cormier is going for the rear naked choke at the end of Round 2. Cole escaped and tried for a kimura, which didn’t seem to bother Cormier at all.
Both men are running out of gas in Round 3, which is uncharted territory for Cormier. Cole needs a finish here, as he is behind on points. Ref separates them for the final 90 seconds. Cormier pounding Cole on top at the final buzzer.
Winner: Daniel Cormier (unanimous decision 30-27)
Ovince St. Preux vs. Abongo Humphrey - Light Heavyweights
Humphrey is 7-2 and is a kickboxer and jiu-jitsu specialist from Atlanta. OSP (9-2) is fighting on Showtime for the third time in a row. He won by unanimous decision in November and December.
He’s a boxer and wrestler from Knoxville and is getting a good crowd reaction as a former Tennessee Volunteers football player.
OSP with a takedown and side control on Humphrey, who turned it around and almost got the kneebar submission. It didn’t work, though, and OSP is throwing vicious lefts and sinks in a great-looking arm triangle choke.
In Round 2, OSP was controlling the action against the cage. The ref separated them, and Humphrey opened up with some great brawling, but OSP responded in kind. Then the exact same thing happened again, only with the brawling order reversed.
OSP on top in Round 3, but this ref wanted ACTION! so they stand up again. Humphrey sinks in a guillotine choke after catching OSP in an awkward position.
OSP finally escaped with 90 seconds to go. Brawl goes in favor of OSP in the final minute, and so will the fight.
Winner: Ovince St. Preaux (unanimous decision 30-27 all the way)
Welterweight main event – Tarek “The Sponge” Saffeidine vs. Tyrone Woodley
Tarek (10-2-1) is a Muay Thai fighter/kickboxer from Belgium. Woodley is 7-0, a wrestler out of St. Louis. T-Wood has submitted five of those seven guys.
Dirty boxing stalemate to start before Woodley secures the takedown. Back up, but Woodley is giving The Sponge no room against the cage. T-Wood said he got a finger in the eye, but the ref said he didn’t see it.
Sponge with knees against the fence early in Round 2, but Woodley explodes out with the takedown. Sponge looks for submissions from the bottom (triangle, armbar), but Woodley slips out of both and continues to smother Saffedeine.
Lot of brawling to start Round 3, but T-Wood goes back to his winning clinch strategy. Sponge takes over and finally puts Woodley on his back.
Sponge is going desperately for an armbar, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Ref separates them with three minutes to go. A little brawling and a lot of clinching. End of fight.
Winner: Woodley (unanimous decision)
